“Baby Girl” UPDATE

Meet Beulah, formerly known as “Baby Girl”.

January 26, 2025 - We find 25 year old Anaja living under a bridge in a makeshift shelter with her two dogs, “Heeler”, and a very pregnant “Baby Girl”. She tells us Baby Girl was dumped under the bridge about two months ago and she is caring for her the best she can.

Our team provided food, water, personal care items, clothing, and dog food to Anaja and others at this location.

Our team member, Renie, had great concern for Baby Girl due to shelter, food, and lack of medical assistance. Renie felt Baby Girl had little chance of surviving much longer, and in the birthing of pups.

Renie makes a personal commitment to Anaja that she would pick Baby Girl up and see that she got proper medical care and would foster her and her pups.

January 28, 2025; Bob and Renie pick up Baby Girl and take to her temporary home at Renie’s. Ref: Newsletter Baby Girl

BEULAH and PUPSSSSSSSS

02.04.2025 @ 4:10 p.m: The first Pup is born; a boy. The Mama Dog, Beulah (f/k/a “Baby Girl”) licked him into life and cleared his airways. Pup 1 found a “spigot” and had his first taste of Mama’s milk.

Then we waited……… 1, 2, 3, 3.8 hours ………… SO long that Beulah, along with Pup 1 (he in a Costco insulated bag wrapped in a warm towel) made a trip to the Vet Emergency Clinic. (see 1 below) While at the Emergency Clinic, she birthed Pup 2, all by herself, and we made the trip home, sometime after 9:00 p.m. Thankfully, she did not birth a pup in the car on the ride home!

Over the next few hours, all the pups (3 girls, 5 boys) were birthed, the final one making his appearance sometime around 1:30 a.m. Clean-up took us to around 3:00 a.m. Then - finally - a cozy, restful, picture of Mom and her Pups.

Beulah and I settled into a life with 8 Puppies. The Pups had a room to themselves, though they did not range beyond the large box (4’x8’x 4”) in which they had been born for the first 2 – 3 weeks. (see 2 below) Beulah was / is a good mother and nursed the Pups “on demand”; she wore herself out. In the first two and ½ weeks, we had to make two more trips to the emergency room for an infusion of fluids. (see 3 below) After the 2 nd trip, my veterinarian gave me a home kit to so that I could give her the fluids myself. Beulah bore the brunt of caring for the pups. My contribution to the cause, for the most part, was to keep their living area clean ( a challenge, indeed) and Beulah fed (4-5 meals / day).

It took only a little more than 2 weeks for the Pups to start spilling out of the “birthing box”, so it was relegated to history. The Puppy Pavilion became their home. Picture a 10 x10 “pop-up” canopy tent as cover over artificial turf and large/flat rocks (flooring), and two dog houses. It was about this same time that the Pups began eating solid food. Relief for Beulah!

The Pups are 8 weeks old today, 04.02.2025. They are strong, healthy, happy, and beautiful (that is what Beulah and I think anyway :-). Beulah weighs in at approximately 40 pounds and appears to be a Spaniel mix. The Pups look as though their lineage may include Blue Heeler / Border Collie. Two of the Pups, Big Ole Boy and Gargantuan Girl (see 4 below), look as though they might grow to be a little larger than Beulah, although it is hard to estimate. L.O.O.A (Littlest One Of All and Fuzzy Bear Brown are two smaller boys; Gray (boy) Sweetie Pie Gray (girl), and Brown Eye Brows (boy) likely will be smaller than Beulah.

The 8 th Pup, Sweetie Pie Brown has already been claimed by a very lucky person.

All are ready to be adopted by someone who will love and care for them. The Pups have had their initial vaccinations, been dewormed, and received their first dosage of heart-worm preventative. Spaying and neutering, unless you, the owner intend to breed them, should occur no earlier than August, when they will be 6 months old.

_______________________________________________

1 A lapse of 4 hours between the birthing of pups is a strong sign that there is a problem. Medical intervention is strongly advised.

2 Fun Fact: Puppies cannot generate their own body heat until they are 2 to 2 1/2 weeks old, which is when they develop the shiver reflex. They can regulate their body temperature at 3 to 4 weeks old

3 The pups were quite demanding and it is not possible to know how much access to food and water she had before Bob and I picked her up on 01.28.2025.

4 These are NOT names, only descriptions. Gargantuan Girl was just born big, hence the name. The others have caught up to her, for the most part.

A note from Bob

The pups are now available for adoption and their forever homes.

IRenie is the real hero in this story. She is on week ten of loving, and caring for Beulah, and these sweet pups.

Renie has spent a substantial amount of money on Beulah and the pups. Please consider a reasonable donation, if you wish to adopt, to help cover a portion of her expenses.

Feel free to call or email me for more information.
